Georgia Melodie Hole

I am a biogeoscientist investigating how Arctic environments respond to climate change across timescales, using natural archives ranging from tree and shrub rings to driftwood and marine sea-ice proxies. I am currently a Visiting Researcher at the University of Arizona Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (LTRR), supported by an Agnese N. Haury Visiting Scholar & Trainee Fellowship, where I am investigating blue and frost rings in Greenland juniper as high-resolution records of Arctic climate extremes.

I am also a Research Associate at Durham University, UK, where I work on Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice reconstruction within the Horizon Europe Past to Future (P2F) project. My research involves compiling and synthesising palaeo-sea-ice proxy records to reconstruct past sea-ice configurations and provide palaeoclimate constraints for Earth System Model evaluation and future climate projections.

More broadly, my research uses natural archives to understand how Arctic environments respond to climate variability across timescales. My previous work includes reconstructing Holocene Arctic Ocean circulation using driftwood as a novel proxy for sea-ice transport, investigating the northward expansion and ecological impacts of beavers in the Arctic, and examining Canadian tundra shrub ecophysiology. I also have experience in collaborative research with Indigenous communities and in communicating environmental science to policy, practitioner and public audiences.
